Summer adventure camp is an excellent place for kids to gain independence and challenge themselves. Unlike traditional types of summer programs, adventure camps put kids in extraordinary circumstances and teach them alternative ways of coping. Since children tend to learn more from hands-on experience, adventure camp is a great place for kids to experience life from different perspectives.
There are literally dozens of adventure summer camps offered all across the country. The one that is best suited for your son or daughter will largely depend in his/her personal preference. Nearly all of the adventure camps worth attending are residential programs. This will mean that your child will have to spend several weeks at a time away from home. Make sure that you address this factor with your child and the responsibilities involved before sending him/her off.
Skills Learned at Adventure Camp
Most of the life skills learned through adventure camp deal with communication and conflict resolution by default. Think about it: when was the last time a group of kids got together in an unfamiliar environment and didnt have a single problem? A good adventure camp will have knowledgeable staff members on hand at all times to spot problems when they arise and work through them in an educational manner. When your child returns home from adventure camp, it is likely that he/she will practice negotiation and compromise when dealing with conflict more than anger or passive aggression.
The curriculum offered by adventure summer camps often includes camping, hiking, rafting, horseback riding, ropes courses and more. After a year or so of sitting inside a classroom, most kids relish the chance to brave the great outdoors with a bunch of new friends. As someone who attended adventure camp as a kid, I strongly recommend the experience.
