There are many things that a youngster can learn at summer camp, the most important being basic life skills. Too often, children are sheltered by their parents and therefore are not exposed to many of lifes greatest challenges. Away from home and immersed in a new environment, camp kids achieve entirely new perspectives on life.
Life Skills Learned At Summer Camp
Social skills are something about which kids learn a great deal of while attending summer camp. This is especially true of residential campers. Albeit intimidating, spending the summer away from home at a fun residential camp; sharing quarters with a bunch of potential new friends; and being more-or-less independent is something that every kid should experience. Social skills are all but guaranteed to mature for kids placed in such an environment.
Conflict resolution skills are also given the opportunity to improve when kids go to summer camp. Similar to physical dexterity, problem solving skills must be exercised in order to develop. At residential camp, children are unable to hide at home and therefore must learn to resolve their differences with other campers either through negotiation or compromise.
Of all the developmental growth that often takes place during summer camp, however, confidence building is often the most prevalent. Outside of school, kids rarely have the opportunity to assert themselves as independent individuals. While at camp, children are challenged on a daily basis and often return home more sure-of-themselves and better able to deal with the world around them as mature adults.
